A Mighty Fortress

This is an old chorale by Martin Luther.

This song is one that has touched me for decades. I was honored to be at MENC (Music Educator National Convention) in 1980. Our orchestra won the Best Orchestra in the Country award. Another arrangement of this song, by Vaclav Nelhybel, is one of many we played. Vaclav Nelhybel is an excellent writer, arranger and human being.

I'm not sure if he was still living in Russia at the time, but he came to hear us play his version of this beautiful song. After the ceremony, he came to speak with us. He had tears in his eyes. He said that we were the first orchestra, professional or amateur, that had played the song as it had been meant to be played. He wrote his arrangement with all his heart, we played with all our hearts.

Musician or music listener, it doesn't matter so long as it is with all our heart and love.
